JUNK TO ART = EARTH FRIENDLY ELEGANCE
Almost Glass:Did you ever play with “Shrinky Dinks”? That very retro material is making a comeback. It’s nothing like you remember as a kid! No one will believe your exotic wearable art is really thermal polymer rescued on its way to a landfill. |
That’s what we call earth friendly elegance! |
More earth friendly materials:
Silver Metal Clay:
A new medium created by Mitsubishi in the 1990s. Finely ground particles of silver captured from manufacturing processes are mixed with a binder and re-purposed as silver metal clay. Cured at over 1100F degrees, the binder burns away leaving only the the silver.
Pique Assiette:
What to do with broken china or that favorite vase? Pendants, pins, and mosaics are RetroVenue’s answer. Using shards is an ancient art made popular in recent times by the likes of Robert Vasseur and Raymond Edouard Isidore, both of France. At his death in 1964 Isidore had covered all surfaces of the interior and exterior of his home and a small chapel in his yard. The beautiful possibilities of pique assiette are unlimited.
Aluminum:
Every since the recycling movement began, aluminum has been at the front of the line. We use the lightweight metal because it is easy to wear and maintain, adds shine, visual interest and is a great way to repurpose another material headed to the landfill.
Glass & Metals:
Heat resistant glass and metal items such as small bottles and tins (like altoid tins) are wonderful bases for polymer clay coatings. RetroVenue supports a world-wide art effort called “Bottles of Hope” that gives small decorated medicine bottles to cancer patients. Bottles of Hope rescue glass from trash and repurpose it as small pieces of art and gifts of hope.
Just Beads:
Broken necklaces, tarnished clasps or metal beads are discarded and vintage glass and ceramic beads get new life in RetroVenue designs.
